GM Adds Premium Trim, Super Cruise on 2022 GMC Sierra Pickup



DETROIT – GMC’s refreshed Sierra pickup will offer more touches of luxury with two new premium trims, additional standard technology and a hands-free ride option for the Denali sub-brand, GMC said Thursday.

The new versions – Denali Ultimate and AT4X – will build on the popularity of GMC’s Denali and AT4 sub-brands, which account for about 45% of retail sales of the full-size Sierra pickup, and further strengthen GMC’s claim on the high-end pickup market, Duncan said. The 2022 Sierra, revealed on Thursday night’s NFL football show, is expected to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter. Despite the continued shortage of microchips that has hampered production across the industry, Aldred is confident that Sierras will ship to dealers on time. GM prioritized full-size pickup and SUV production throughout the chip crisis and expects to break a Sierra sales record this year.

GMC sold 191,186 Sierra pickup trucks this year through September, up 9.5% from the previous year. But Sierra’s sales fell 22% in the third quarter. The Sierra, Ram and Nissan Titan are the only full-size pickups to post higher sales through September, with the Sierra’s segment share rising to 11.5% from 10.4% a year earlier.

GMC expects the additional versions to ensure that Denali and AT4 account for at least half of Sierra’s sales.

GM’s Super Cruise driver assistance technology will be available on all Denali trims for the 2022 model year, and it will be standard on the Denali Ultimate. The latest version of Super Cruise features automatic lane change and towing capability.

GMC customers “love the high end and luxury of the Denali. But they want more standard equipment and unmatched technology, ”Molly Peck, vice president of marketing at Buick-GMC, said at a press conference. “This is where Super Cruise hands-free driving becomes standard across the Denali Ultimate package.”

The Denali Ultimate will start at $ 80,395, nearly $ 50,000 more than the low-level Sierra Pro version and about $ 20,000 more than the standard Denali. The AT4X will start at $ 74,995, about $ 14,000 more than the standard AT4. Both prices include shipping.

Even with high price tags, Aldred is confident that the new versions will increase sales volume.

“There is a lot of personal spending in the market,” he said. “You just have to look at the success we’ve had in terms of Hummer bookings or just the average transaction prices we’ve seen, whether in the new Yukon or in the Sierra as it is.”
